If you take a check you’ve received that is drawn on WaMu/Chase to a WaMu/Chase branch to cash it, and don’t have an account with them, they will charge you a $6 fee. (story)

I couldn’t agree more. They’re also rated very low by all banking organizations in terms of soundness and fiscal stability. All banks use us but these really are some bastards.

Wells Fargo also charges a fee of $5-$10 to encash checks if you don’t have an account with them. Bank associates will advise you to open a new account to waive said fee, but herein lies the problem—the funds from the check you were trying to encash and subsequently deposited into the new account will not be immediately available because of a required bank hold. I mean it’s pretty obvious why anyone would cash a check at the payor’s bank—because access to those funds is needed IMMEDIATELY. I’m certain I’m not the only one who avoids unnecessary/unplanned trips to the bank for a simple transaction that can be done online, but having to deal with all that just proved one thing to me—the current banking system is simply just LEGAL THIEVERY. Plain and simple.
